Finite Element Analysis

Client Industry: Various

Result: N/A

As the name suggests, Finite Element Analysis (“FEA”) is a technique of engineering analysis that breaks down a large problem into a finite number of smaller problems so that calculations can be (somewhat) easily handled using mathematical techniques such as linear algebra. The technique allows for approximate solutions to complicated questions and has been a powerful tool used in engineering for the past 80+ years. With the onset of computers and powerful computing systems, FEA can be used to predict stresses and deformation in a variety of complicated situations. Because FEA is based upon approximate solutions, it is important to understand that the quality and accuracy of results are highly dependent on the quality and accuracy of the models and boundary conditions selected by the engineer (i.e. garbage in = garbage out). When possible, FEA should be should be validated by comparison to traditional and theoretical engineering results.
