Failure AnalysisQuarry SawClient Industry: InsuranceResult: N/A
Background:A quarry saw is used to cut rock harvested from an open-pit mine. Quarries are used for extracting building materials, such as gravel, sand, and limestone. Circular and band saws can be used to cut into the rock making it much smaller such as in blocks or fine dusts. In this particular case, we were consulted in order to perform a site inspection of a quarry saw at a limestone plant to determine if quarry saw failure subsequently damaged the saw motor bracket, or if motor bracket failure subsequently caused the quarry saw to fall to the ground. This is a classic case of “what came first, the chicken or the egg.”Conclusion:
We determined that the damage to the motor bracket occurred as a result of the failure of the saw itself that it was in fact out of alignment. The saw became out of alignment on the track it was operating on, and subsequently fell off impacting the ground and damaging the motor. The shock from the quarry saw hitting the ground fractured the motor and damaged the metal casing.
